About Deb Montgomery - Textile Artist
Over the years Deb Montgomery has explored all kinds of artistic pursuits, from making porcelain dolls, to grizzly bears, teaching at Spotlight and Stitch & Patch, making patchwork, embroidery, crazy patch – you name it. But after years of doing embroidery, Deb was forced to rethink her approach to quilting due to the pain she experienced from arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Having to stop the repetitive motion of embroidery made Deb think even further outside the square than normal, and so she created a form of textile artwork that doesn’t require stitching. Where a purist might stitch by hand, she uses a sewing machine, and she draws with it – literally. Sometimes, instead of stitching she uses a hot melt glue gun. ‘I created the backing and then just built it up from there,’ Deb explains. ’ With her pieces, there is no pre-design, it is all purely spontaneous, and the best apart - there’s no right and wrong way.
